Family programs, staff retention challenge IDDT providers to explore innovations
by Paul M. Kubek and Matthew K. Weiland
At the Northeast IDDT Regional Stakeholders meeting in May, participants shared challenges and emerging solutions to implementing and sustaining family psychoeducational programs and enhancing the recruitment and retention of service team members. Family psychoeducation is a core component of the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) model. The Ohio SAMI CCOE has observed that achieving and sustaining fidelity to this item on the IDDT fidelity scale has been particularly challenging throughout the country, even in the northeast region of Ohio where several long-standing IDDT programs have consistently achieved moderate to high overall fidelity to the model.

Center for Evidence-Based Practices provides technical assistance,
promotes mental health, recovery & employment
by Paul M. Kubek
People with severe mental illness and their families in communities
throughout Ohio, several other states, and two countries are experiencing
an improved quality of life, in part, because of the work being
done by the staff of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs).
The Center functions as an umbrella entity for two organizations
that disseminate two different yet related EBPs. The Ohio Substance
Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio
SAMI CCOE) disseminates the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment
(IDDT) model. The Ohio Supported Employment Coordinating Center
of Excellence (SE CCOE) disseminates the evidence-based Supported

and providing treatment to people who experience severe mental
illness (e.g., schizophrenia, bi-polar, depression) and a co-occurring
substance use disorder (i.e., alcohol and other drugs). Prescribing

CCOE develops practical guide to stages of organizational change
for IDDT/EBP implementation
There are numerous journal articles and book chapters written
about the core components and benefits of Integrated Dual Disorder
Treatment (IDDT), the evidence-based practice (EBP) for people
with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. Yet, until
now, there has not been much written about how to prepare and
motivate your organization and community to implement and sustain
this EBP with success.
The Ohio SAMI CCOE has a new resource to address this need--a
booklet titled "Implementing IDDT: A step-by-step guide to
stages of organizational change". This unique 40-page booklet
is based upon published research and the practice experiences
of the Ohio SAMI CCOE's consultants and trainers. It is a useful
guide for implementing and sustaining the IDDT model. The booklet
includes
- 5 stages of change/implementation,
- 8 to 12 practical action steps in each stage, and
- 27 sources and resources
